German Translation Service

English to German • German to English

Spoken primarily in Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and two-thirds of Switzerland, German is the most widely spoken first language in the European Union
, above both French and English.
As of 2009, German had close to 100 million native speakers across Europe, as well as many other speakers worldwide.

Both English and German belong to the Germanic family of languages. In fact, English came into being as a variety of West Germanic in approximately 500 BC. It was not until 200-700 AD that English and German began to diverge, in those days into “Old English” and “High German”. Over the centuries these dialects continued to adapt and evolve into the distinct languages we know today.

The modern German government is heavily involved in promoting the German language throughout Europe and the world. Its worldwide organization, the Goethe Institut, teaches language classes and serves up German arts and cultural events. “Instituts” can be found in 92 countries around the world, including a branch on Cuba Street in Wellington.

Did you know? German is the only major language that capitalizes all nouns.
