English to Russian • Russian to English

With approximately 160 million speakers throughout Russia and its neighbouring countries, Russian is one of Europe’s most prominent languages. An official language of the United Nations, it plays an important role both culturally and politically around the world.

Until 1917, Russian was the sole official language of the Russian Empire. During the Soviet period, policies regarding the languages of other ethnic groups fluctuated. Though each republic of the USSR had its own official language, the unifying role was reserved for Russian. Following the 1991 breakup, several of the newly independent states have strongly discouraged Russian. However, it has held on to its role as the common language throughout the region.

Russian is written using a modern version of the Cyrillic alphabet. It is closely related to the other East Slavic tongues, Ukrainian (also called "Little Russian") and Belarusian (or "White Russian"). The former is spoken by about 45 million people, mainly in the Ukraine and Russia. The latter, which also uses a form of the Cyrillic alphabet, is the mother tongue of about 8 million people, most of whom live in Belarus.

Did you know? About 750,000 ethnic Jewish immigrants speak Russian in Israel from the former Soviet Union. The Israeli press and websites regularly publish material in Russian.
